29 September: Feast of Archangel Michael

On 29 September, the Church celebrates the feast of Archangel Michael, together with Gabriel and Raphael. Michael is honored as prince of the heavenly hosts, conqueror of the dragon, and powerful protector. His name, “Who is like God?”, reflects both humility and divine strength.

In Christian tradition, Michael appears as the warrior who defeats Lucifer and casts down the forces of evil. For centuries he has been venerated as patron of the Church and defender of the faithful.

In sacred art, Michael is typically shown with a sword or lance, standing triumphant over the dragon. The woodcarving workshops of Gröden capture this strong imagery in detailed and expressive sculptures.
