June 17th – St. Albert Chmielowski: Monk of the Poor

On June 17, the Church commemorates St. Albert Chmielowski , a 19th-century Polish saint who dedicated his life entirely to the poor and outcast. Born in 1845 as Adam Chmielowski, he was initially a well-known painter and patriot. After a profound inner transformation, he left the art world and entered the Franciscan order, where he took the name Albert. In 1887, he founded the Brothers of St. Albert , an order to care for the homeless, the sick, and the needy. His commitment to social justice and human dignity was radical—he himself lived in poverty among the poorest. Pope John Paul II called him a living image of the merciful Christ .
