June 11 – St. Barnabas: Encourager, Bridge Builder, Martyr

On June 11, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Barnabas , one of Christ's earliest disciples and a companion of the Apostle Paul. Born in Cyprus, Barnabas was among the first Christians to sell their possessions to give to the poor. His Hebrew name was Joseph—Barnabas means "son of consolation." It was he who, after Paul’s conversion, brought him into the community He introduced a new world when others still feared him. Together they traveled on missionary journeys through Asia Minor. Barnabas is described as a man of peace and encouragement —a model of community, reconciliation, and missionary zeal.

He is considered the patron saint of Cyprus and the peacemaker.
