June 23 – Saint Joseph Cafasso: Priest of the Prisoners

On June 23, the Church commemorates Saint Joseph Cafasso , an Italian priest who became known in the 19th century for his profound humanity and pastoral care. Born in 1811 in Castelnuovo d'Asti—the same town as Don Bosco—he dedicated his life to the formation of priests and the pastoral care of marginalized groups. Cafasso became particularly well-known for his commitment to prisoners and those sentenced to death . He accompanied them until their final hour, offering comfort and spiritual support. He was called the "Priest of the Gallows." His gentleness, steadfastness, and unwavering love of God made him a spiritual role model for many priests, including Don Bosco.

He is considered the patron saint of prison chaplains and seminaries .
