June 27 – Saint Cyril of Alexandria: Champion of the Motherhood of God
On June 27, the Church commemorates Saint Cyril of Alexandria , one of the most important Church Fathers of the East. Born around 376, he became Patriarch of Alexandria—one of the most influential bishoprics of late antiquity. Cyril was an eloquent theologian who tirelessly advocated for the true teachings about Christ and Mary .
At the Council of Ephesus in 431, he defended the doctrine that Mary must be venerated as the "Mother of God" (Theotokos). This decision was groundbreaking for Mariology and Christology as a whole. He was also a man of clear words and a profound prayer life.
Cyril is considered a doctor of the Church and patron of deep devotion to Christ and Mary.
